India’s Worst Train Stampede: Calls for National Crowd Control Strategy

India mourned 18 lives lost in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, with industrialist Anand Mahindra calling for a national strategy to prevent such tragedies. Mahindra Group chairperson Mahindra said the country needs “crowd control and safety” to be a “national mission”.

The incident occurred on Saturday when thousands of devotees rushed to board a special train to Prayagraj, amid false rumors that the train would arrive at a different platform. Railway officials attributed the chaos to overcrowding, while witnesses claimed panic set in after people slipped and fell from a foot-over bridge.

In the aftermath, Indian Railways announced compensation for victims’ families, and the government ordered a high-level inquiry into the stampede’s cause. A two-member committee has been formed to investigate.

Mahindra urges collaboration between engineering schools and the railway authorities to develop a concrete plan for effective crowd control. “We all need to chip in” to prevent such tragedies in the future, he tweeted.
