A US-based indie game marketplace, itch.io, was taken offline for three hours by an automated system, with the platform blaming an “AI-powered” software used by the toy company Funko. The incident occurred due to a false phishing report sent to itch.io’s domain registrar, iwantmyname, which disabled the site without reviewing the confirmation email. BrandShield, a company providing Funko with the brand protection solution, described its tool as a monitoring system for trademark infringements and phishing attempts.
