IndiGo has announced that it will take delivery of an additional 30 Airbus A350-900s, increasing its total order to 60 aircraft. The airline plans to use these planes for long-haul international operations, with the goal of expanding its network and offering more travel options to customers.
The new aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engines and are expected to help address the rapidly evolving needs of the Indian market. IndiGo has also signed an agreement to lease six Boeing 787 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways, allowing it to launch long-haul operations this year.
As part of its expansion plans, IndiGo will be partnering with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Air France to codeshare flights on their networks, while also joining forces with Delta Air Lines. This move is expected to enable the airline to reach more destinations in Europe and North America.
IndiGo’s CEO has stated that the airline aims to become a global carrier in the coming years, but is taking a measured approach by focusing on expanding its network gradually. The airline currently operates widebody planes such as the Boeing 777 and 787 on wet lease, but these new A350s will allow it to reach destinations that are currently out of range.
The expansion plans come ahead of IndiGo’s planned launch of long-haul flights from Mumbai to Manchester, Amsterdam, London, and Copenhagen later this year. The airline has also announced new routes between Mumbai and Atlanta in the near future.
