Indonesia has become the 7th member of the BRICS bloc, joining Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The Southeast Asian nation’s membership was approved by consensus following its bid in 2023.
Brazilian officials confirmed that Indonesia had been welcomed into the group as a “strategic way to increase collaboration and partnership with other developing nations.” This move aims to further strengthen emerging countries and promote the interests of the Global South.
Indonesia, with over 273 million people, is the world’s fourth most populous nation. The country’s President Prabowo Subianto took office in October last year, following a presidential election.
The BRICS group was established as a platform for major emerging economies to cooperate on global issues and reform governance institutions. With Indonesia’s membership, the bloc now has 7 members working together to promote economic growth, trade, and cultural exchange among developing nations.
