Indonesian Volcano Erupts, Cancels Hundreds of Flights to Bali

A volcano in Indonesia has erupted, sending a massive ash cloud over 6 miles into the sky and disrupting hundreds of flights to and from Bali. Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki’s eruption on Tuesday prompted officials to issue the country’s highest alert, urging tourists to stay away.

The volcano’s hot ash column was spotted as far as 93 miles away, engulfing a nearby village. Dozens of flights were canceled or disrupted, including domestic routes and international flights to Australia, China, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Tourists traveling to Bali and Komodo National Park are among those affected, with over 1,000 people impacted by the cancelations. The volcano’s last eruption in May raised alert levels, while a previous incident in March forced airlines to cancel flights.

Indonesia is home to 120 active volcanoes and experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location along the “Ring of Fire.” Authorities are working to ensure passenger safety, with flight disruptions expected until Thursday.
