IndyCar Fans Seek Shelter as Tornado Warning Issued at Iowa Speedway

A tornado warning was issued at Iowa Speedway on Friday, prompting drivers and spectators to take cover amid severe weather. The National Weather Service warned of flying debris and flooding hazards, advising fans to seek shelter in low-lying areas or lie down in ditches. With no basements or storm shelters available, attendees were told to consider heading to their personal vehicles for safety.

Seventy-seven drivers took part in the NTT IndyCar Series practice session when the storm system moved in around 2:45 p.m. local time. As sirens sounded, an announcer urged everyone to “seek shelter immediately.” Track staff advised fans to find a substantial shelter or use their vehicles as a last resort.

Meteorologists cautioned that vehicles can be hazardous during significant tornadoes due to powerful winds and flying debris. During a real tornado, forecasters recommend finding a low-lying ditch and covering your head to protect from harm. Luckily, there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage in southeastern Iowa after the storms passed. The weekend’s IndyCar event is expected to proceed with favorable weather forecasts for Saturday and Sunday.
