A 23-year-old beauty and lifestyle influencer was shot and killed while live-streaming on TikTok from a salon in Zapopan, Mexico City. Valeria Márquez, who had over 200,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok, was pronounced dead at the scene after being targeted by a male intruder.
Prosecutors are investigating her death as a suspected case of femicide, a killing motivated by gender-based reasons. The suspect’s identity remains unknown. According to reports, Márquez had received an “expensive gift” earlier during the livestream, which she seemed concerned about.
Mexico has one of the highest femicide rates in Latin America and worldwide, with recorded cases increasing significantly over the past decade. Jalisco state, where Márquez’s death occurred, is ranked sixth for homicides since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in 2024.
