Instagram has introduced its new map feature, which allows users to share their most recent active location with others and discover location-based content. The new feature is similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map and comes as part of the platform’s efforts to compete in the social media landscape.
The map feature will make it easier for friends to coordinate and link up for hangouts, while also allowing users to explore location-based content that their friends and favorite creators have shared or engaged with. Users can share their location via the app, but only for up to one hour.
In addition to the new map feature, Instagram is launching reposts, a feature similar to TikTok’s “retweet” function from Twitter (now X). Users can repost public reels and feed posts, and these reposts will be displayed in a new “Reposts” tab on their profile. The company is also making its “Friends” tab in Reels available globally.
Users who want to browse and interact with content privately can now opt out of having content they’ve engaged with shown in the friends tab. They can hide likes, comments, and reposts from specific people they follow or mute them entirely.
