Instagram has announced its new video editing software, Edits, just days after the ban of TikTok and CapCut in the US. The platform’s head, Adam Mosseri, stated that Instagram aims to create “the most compelling creative tools” despite current events.
Edits will allow users to create videos up to 10 minutes long in 1080p resolution, with features like artificial intelligence animation, generative captions, and overlays. The app is available for pre-order on the Apple App Store, with a February release expected. Mosseri emphasized that Edits caters to users who make short-form videos on their phones.
In contrast to CapCut, Edits is a separate video editing software owned by Instagram’s parent company, Meta. The ban of CapCut in the US was largely due to federal legislation requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest its platforms by January 19.
