Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has expressed his disappointment in Intel’s decline, citing the US chipmaker’s struggles in chip design and fabrication. Gates, who wrote about his concerns in a new memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings, stated that Intel is “behind” in these areas compared to rival companies like Nvidia.
Gates highlighted Intel’s missed opportunity in the AI chip boom, where Nvidia dominates sales for enterprise-grade GPUs powering generative AI technologies. He also expressed hope that former CEO Pat Gelsinger could turn the company around before his resignation. However, Gates now doubts whether Intel can recover from its growing competition from AMD, Apple, and Qualcomm.
Despite this, Intel is trying to engineer a turnaround with its new “18A” chip manufacturing process, which will be integrated into PC chips called “Panther Lake.” The technology aims to bring Intel back in the game, but Gates’ comments suggest that the challenge ahead may be significant.
