Intel to Require License for Export of Advanced AI Chips to China

US chipmaker Intel will start needing a license to sell its advanced artificial intelligence processors, including the Gaudi series, to Chinese clients if they meet certain bandwidth requirements. This decision comes as US President Donald Trump’s trade policy shifts affect semiconductor and computing giants.

Under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel informed clients that chips requiring over 1,400 GB/s of DRam bandwidth or 1,100 GB/s of I/O bandwidth will need a license to be exported to China. The Gaudi series and Nvidia’s H20 far exceed these requirements.

Intel’s shares fell by more than 3% on Wednesday as chip stocks came under pressure due to uncertainty over the US trade policy. The AI chip trade has been losing steam for two years, driven by tariff threats and concerns over Big Tech spending.
