International Paper Closes Savannah and Riceboro Mills

International Paper has announced it will close its locations in Savannah and Riceboro, Georgia, affecting approximately 1,100 hourly and salaried positions. The company cited strategic changes to achieve an advantaged cost position, superior customer experience, and maintaining a high relative supply position as the reason for the closure.

The shutdown is expected to occur in phases by the end of September. International Paper will provide severance packages and outplacement assistance to impacted employees. Local authorities, including the Savannah Mayor’s office, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA), have released statements expressing concern for the employees’ well-being.

SEDA has announced that it will be providing support from the Technical System of Georgia and the Department of Labor. Additionally, a job fair is planned for September 20 to assist affected workers in finding new employment opportunities.
