International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry wants to meet with US President Donald Trump to ensure the success of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Coventry, who is Zimbabwe’s sports minister and Africa’s most decorated Olympian, believes Trump supports sport and sees the Games as a major commercial opportunity.
Coventry plans to discuss LA 28 Games’ potential challenges, including stricter border entry requirements for athletes due to Trump’s executive orders. However, she wants to clarify that the IOC still allows transgender athletes to compete under general guidance, differing from Trump’s stance on the matter.
The IOC will need to resolve this issue with international federations and take a joint decision on how to protect the female category. Coventry also plans to address the timing of clear guidance for future Olympics.
Coventry takes over as president of the IOC on June 24, succeeding Thomas Bach.
