Apple has released iOS 18.4, which brings several new features, including a welcome upgrade for car owners. The update introduces an extra row of icons in certain cars with larger infotainment screens, providing easier access to more apps on a single screen and reducing distractions while driving.
However, the change is not universal, affecting only cars with larger displays like the Toyota Tundra’s 14-inch screen. In contrast, smaller infotainment screens like my own 8-inch display remained unchanged.
Another significant upgrade for electric vehicle (EV) owners is Apple Maps’ new support for the North American Charging System (NACS), which now allows Tesla chargers to be listed as part of EV routing options.
These updates are notable but not part of a larger, long-awaited CarPlay overhaul that would see Apple’s in-car software take over the car. That feature remains elusive. Nevertheless, these smaller upgrades can still prove useful for those with compatible cars.
