Iowa Dismisses Coach Fran McCaffery After 15 Seasons

Fran McCaffery’s tenure ends after 143 Big Ten wins, a legacy marred by recent struggles.

Iowa has let go of long-time head coach Fran McCaffery, marking the end of his 15-year tenure with the Hawkeyes. The move comes despite an impressive record, including 297 wins and 143 Big Ten victories, as well as seven NCAA tournament appearances.

McCaffery’s departure follows a season that saw Iowa struggle, ending with a 106-94 loss to Illinois in the second round of the Big Ten tournament after a strong start. The team finished the campaign 17-16 and 7-13 in the league.

A national search for a new coach has begun immediately. McCaffery’s exit caps off an era that also saw four players selected in the NBA draft since 2021, including first-round picks Keegan Murray and Kris Murray in 2022 and 2023. However, Iowa’s recent struggles may have contributed to his dismissal.
