Iowa Family’s Autism Story Transcends ‘The Unbreakable Boy’

A father from Iowa, Scott LeRette, wrote a journal about his struggles with sobriety and parenting his son with autism nearly 15 years ago. The message wasn’t initially intended for anyone but himself, but it eventually became the book “Unbreakable Boy” and now a movie. The story follows Austin’s journey with autism and a bone disorder that causes painful fractures.

The film stars Zachary Levi, Meghann Fahy, and Jacob Laval, and focuses on Scott’s relationship with his son and how faith helps them find joy amidst challenges. Austin hopes the movie inspires audiences to hold onto hope, believing it’s key to family happiness.

Scott LeRette has attended advanced screenings and premieres across the US, noting a remarkable response from audiences. He attributes this to our current societal state being “broken” and divided, making stories like his timely. “Unbreakable Boy” is now playing in theaters nationwide, including Cinemark Century Jordan Creek 20 and XD, B&B Theatres Ankeny 12, and more.
