The University of Iowa announced that it will retire Caitlin Clark’s jersey number 22 during a ceremony at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on February 2. The event, which will be broadcast on FOX, is expected to honor the program’s most accomplished player and feature Clark in attendance.
Clark broke the NCAA’s all-time scoring record among both men’s and women’s players in her four seasons with Iowa, leading the team to two NCAA championship game appearances. She was also a consensus National Player of the Year as a junior and senior. Clark has been named Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year after a historic season.
WNBA stars Henry and Patricia Tippie praised Clark’s contributions, saying she “has not only redefined excellence on the court but has also inspired countless young athletes to pursue their dreams with passion and determination.” The jersey retirement comes just two months after Clark was named Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year.
