Apple is expected to release its new iPhone 17 Air model this year, with rumors suggesting it will be significantly thinner than its predecessor. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the device is predicted to measure 5.5 mm thick at its thinnest point, making it nearly 30% thinner than the current iPhone 16.
For comparison, the Galaxy S25 Slim from Samsung is expected to be around 6.x mm thick, although this dimension has yet to be officially confirmed. The iPhone 17 Air’s slim design may be attributed to the removal of a physical SIM card slot and eSIM support, allowing Apple to reduce thickness.
The new model will reportedly replace the current iPhone 16 Plus, which is considered one of the least popular models in the range. Apple aims to generate extra sales with a redesign and a new name, leveraging the phone’s thinness as a key selling point.
If Kuo’s prediction is correct, the iPhone 17 Air would claim the title of thinnest iPhone ever built, surpassing the current record holder, the iPhone 6 from 2014. The device is also expected to feature a thinner and more efficient display technology, alongside improved performance.
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim will be released simultaneously with other Galaxy S25 models at the January 22 Samsung Unpacked event, giving users an opportunity to compare the two devices.
