The FBI and US cyber security experts are warning Americans about potential security risks when sending texts using iPhones and Android phones. A Chinese-backed hacking campaign, known as Salt Typhoon, has been launched to target American mobile device communications.
Officials advise people to use encrypted messaging apps, such as Signal and WhatsApp, to protect their communications from foreign hackers. However, issues can arise for users of Google and iMessage, who may be exposed when texting others using different applications that aren’t end-to-end encrypted.
Hackers have targeted three types of data: call records, live phone calls, and information related to telecommunications companies and law enforcement agencies. To prevent this, experts recommend using cellphone devices that automatically receive timely operating system updates and responsible encryption, as well as multi-factor authentication for email, social media, and collaboration tool accounts.
