A recent Chinese cyberattack, known as the “Salt Typhoon” campaign, has compromised the phone numbers and texts of over 100 government officials in the US. The FBI is warning iPhone and Android users against sending messages to each other due to a security vulnerability in these communication channels.
According to the agency, iPhone-to-Android messaging is not secure, while inter-device communication on both platforms is vulnerable to hacking. To protect themselves, users are advised to use encrypted messaging services like WhatsApp or make phone calls instead of sending texts.
The FBI emphasizes that Android-to-Android and iPhone-to-iPhone messaging apps are secure, but the risk of interception remains when messages are exchanged between different devices or types of phones. The Chinese Embassy has denied any involvement in the alleged cyberattack.
