A critical warning has been issued to 1.8 billion iPhone users worldwide due to multiple dangerous flaws in Apple’s AirPlay technology. Cybersecurity researchers at Oligo Security discovered 23 vulnerabilities that allow hackers to infiltrate any device connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
The team found two particularly alarming flaws, dubbed “AirBorne,” which enable attackers to weaponize iPhones and deploy malware that spreads to devices on nearby networks. This allows hackers to gain full control of infected devices, exploit them for malicious code execution, steal personal information, and even listen to conversations.
Despite Apple’s release of software updates on March 31 to fix the bugs, some third-party devices may still be vulnerable due to manufacturer delays in providing timely security patches. Oligo estimates that tens of millions of third-party AirPlay-enabled devices are at risk.
To protect yourself, it is essential to ensure your iPhone is running with the latest software and disable AirPlay features whenever possible. This will prevent hackers from exploiting these vulnerabilities. To turn off AirPlay on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity, and select “Never” under Automatically AirPlay.
It is also crucial for users of third-party devices that support AirPlay to check with their manufacturers for recent security updates. If no updates are available, it may take years or even be impossible to patch these vulnerabilities, leaving your device vulnerable to attacks from hackers.
