The Houthis, backed by Iran, have launched an attack against Israel for the first time since a month-long US-Israel war on Iran began. The Israeli military intercepted a missile coming from Yemen and confirmed it was their first operation of the war. The group claims to have launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israeli military sites, but no casualties were reported.
The Houthis’ absence in Iran’s retaliatory efforts had unnerved oil markets, leading to disruptions in global trade and markets. The militant group said its “naval blockade” was carried out in solidarity with the Palestinian people against Israel. They sank four vessels, including at least two cargo ships, killing at least eight sailors.
The US and Israel launched their campaign against Iran after the Houthis targeted maritime traffic and American troops in the Red Sea. The US has deployed more ground troops to the region, raising concerns about potential US military operations against Iran escalating. Thirteen US troops have been killed in action, and at least 303 have been wounded.
The conflict is widening as Israel launched a parallel invasion of Lebanon to root out the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, which has killed over 1,000 people and displaced nearly a fifth of the population. The Israeli military also targeted three journalists from Hezbollah-affiliated networks, sparking international condemnation.
