Iran Claims Capture of Israeli Nuclear Files Without Evidence

Iran’s intelligence minister, Esmail Khatib, has claimed that the country has obtained thousands of pages of documents related to Israel’s nuclear program, without providing any evidence. This comes ahead of a week in which Iran is likely to face new diplomatic pressure over its own nuclear program.

Khatib made the statement during a Cabinet meeting on Sunday, saying that Iranian intelligence officials had “achieved an important treasury” of strategic, operational and scientific intelligence from Israel’s “Zionist regime.” He claimed that the documents would be made public soon and included information related to the US, Europe and other countries.

Iran is likely to face censure this week from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over its nuclear program. The country has also rejected a proposal from the US after five rounds of negotiations, setting the stage for increased tensions in the region.

The claim may be designed to show Iran’s public that it was able to respond to a 2018 Israeli operation that spirited out documents related to Iran’s program. This move comes as Iran enriches uranium up to 60% purity, a step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%. The country has enough highly enriched uranium to build multiple atomic bombs.

Without a deal with the US, Iran’s economy could enter a freefall, worsen unrest at home and lead to increased tensions with Israel or the US. Experts fear that Tehran may decide to end its cooperation with the IAEA and rush toward a bomb.
