Iran has launched its first solo military exercises since the June war with Israel, state media reported. The “Sustainable Power 1404” drill saw navy units firing missiles and drones at open water targets in the Indian Ocean.
The drills come after Iran suffered heavy losses in the 12-day air war with Israel, which also involved US airstrikes on key nuclear installations. Israel’s attacks largely destroyed Iran’s air defenses and damaged much of its ballistic missile stockpile.
Iran has vowed to counter any future attacks, with the Defence Ministry saying “any new adventure by the enemy will be faced with a strong slap.” The country has suspended negotiations with the US over curbing its nuclear ambitions after the airstrikes. However, it remains open to cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.
Iran believes the moment for effective nuclear talks with the US is not yet arrived and denies any intent to develop atomic bombs.
