Iran Demands Apology from France Over ‘Insulting’ Cannes Remarks

Iran summoned the French ambassador to Tehran after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot made comments on Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or win. Barrot said Panahi’s film was a “gesture of resistance against the Iranian regime’s oppression,” sparking diplomatic row. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Mohammad Tanhaei, called the remarks “insulting” and “blatant interference” in the country’s internal affairs. He demanded an explanation from France and criticized France for not supporting Palestinians in Gaza. Panahi has faced criticism for his outspoken views on Iranian politics, but his film, “It Was Just An Accident,” received praise and won top prize at Cannes.
