Iran Deploys 88,000 Afghans in Week Amid Rising Humanitarian Crisis

Iran has forcibly deported over 88,000 undocumented Afghan migrants to Afghanistan in a week, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The report highlights a critical humanitarian crisis as only 11% of returnees received any assistance due to resource limitations. The majority of those deported were women and children traveling with families.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of dire health challenges awaiting returnees in overcrowded border areas. Authorities have cracked down on Afghan refugees, issuing new orders invalidating lease agreements and detaining migrants across provinces. Pakistan has also resumed strict enforcement against Afghan refugees, increasing identity checks, detentions, and deportations.

Human rights groups are sounding the alarm over mass arrests and forced returns. The IOM and WHO have appealed for immediate international support to address the escalating crisis, citing rising threats of homelessness, poverty, and deteriorating health conditions among Afghan returnees.
