The number of people executed in Iran rose to 901 last year, including 31 women, according to the United Nations human rights office. Most cases involved drug-related offences, but some were political dissidents and victims of domestic violence.
In at least 15 years, the number of executions has reached its highest level since 2015. The majority of the 31 women executed were found guilty of murder, often due to domestic violence or forced marriage. One woman was killed by her husband to prevent him from raping their daughter.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the increase in executions, calling it “deeply disturbing.” Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has promised to better protect women and minorities’ rights during his campaign.
