Iran Nobel Peace Prize Winner Narges Mohammadi’s Medical Treatment Delayed Jail Term Suspension

Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has had her prison term suspended to undergo medical treatment following the removal of a tumor and bone grafting operation. The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner was released from Evin prison on Wednesday after her sentence was temporarily halted for three weeks, according to her lawyer Mostafa Nili.

Mohammadi, who is serving multiple sentences in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, faces charges including spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Her release from prison comes as a relief, given that she had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long campaign for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed concern over Mohammadi’s ongoing illness and pain, urging Iranian authorities to ensure her access to adequate medical treatment. A forensic doctor’s recommendation led to the suspension of her jail term, allowing her time for examination every three months due to her physical condition.
