Iran Nuclear Talks with US End Without Breakthrough, Progress Made

Iran and the United States concluded their second round of nuclear talks in Geneva without reaching a breakthrough, but both sides claimed some progress was made. The two-day meeting focused on Iran’s nuclear program and U.S. demands for curbs to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon.

The US wants limits on Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities, while Tehran is seeking relief from crushing sanctions that are exacerbating its economic crisis. After the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said both sides had “much more serious discussions” and reached guiding principles, but drafting an agreement will remain difficult due to differing stances.

The talks were mediated by Oman and come as tensions between Iran and the US have been escalating, with the US deploying a military aircraft carrier strike group to the region. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei threatened U.S. naval assets in the Persian Gulf, fueling concerns of a potential military confrontation if negotiations fail.
