Iran has accelerated its search for a successor to 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is being regularly briefed on succession talks amid growing concerns about his safety. The country’s ruling establishment aims to name a new leader if Khamenei is killed or incapacitated.
Two frontrunners have emerged in the succession discussions: Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader’s son, and Hassan Khomeini, who has close ties to Iran’s reformist faction. Mojtaba’s views echo those of his father on key issues, which could be a hindrance to his candidacy.
Hassan Khomeini, however, is seen as more palatable to the Iranian population due to his warnings about rising popular dissatisfaction and poverty. The succession planners are aware that he could facilitate a slow transition, but hardline officials have historically barred him from running for senior clerical positions.
The search for a successor comes at a time when Iran is under attack from both the US and its regional rivals, and the ruling establishment seeks someone who can guide the country through this challenging period. With several potential candidates already eliminated, including former presidents and senior clerics, the selection process may involve less prominent clergy members or even “pawns” of the Revolutionary Guards.
The supreme leader’s voice carries significant weight in Iran, and any successor must be able to maintain his power and influence. The search for a new leader is likely to be marked by intense political maneuvering and behind-the-scenes negotiations.
