Iran, US Hold First Face-to-Face Talks on Nuclear Program

Iran and the United States have begun their first round of face-to-face talks on Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. The negotiations, held in Oman, aimed to discuss key issues such as sanctions relief and uranium enrichment levels.

According to Iranian state television, US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for over two hours. Although the meeting was described as “brief” by Araghchi, it marked a significant step forward in the talks between the two countries.

The White House described the discussions as “very positive and constructive,” citing the direct communication between Witkoff and Araghchi as a positive sign. However, experts note that the issues at hand are complex and will require compromise to reach an agreement.

Sanctions relief is seen as a key concession for Iran, while the US is likely to push for limits on uranium enrichment levels. The talks have been marked by tension between hard-liners in Iran, who may view Araghchi’s downplaying of the meeting as a sign of appeasement.

Next round of negotiations will take place on April 19.
