Negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program will resume on Saturday in Oman. The talks aim to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting some economic sanctions imposed by the U.S.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff will lead the negotiations, which come after last weekend’s talks in Rome. However, Rome remains in mourning following Pope Francis’ funeral, which took place on Saturday.
Oman has been a mediator between Tehran and Washington, but Iranian officials have warned that they could pursue a nuclear weapon if a deal isn’t reached. The U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened airstrikes targeting Iran’s program if no agreement is made.
China and Russia have offered support for the negotiations, with Chinese state-run Xinhua news agency describing the talks as “constructive” and emphasizing mutual respect. However, tensions remain high, particularly from Israel, which has warned of possible airstrikes against Iranian enrichment sites.
Iranians remain hopeful that the talks could be successful, despite past instances of sabotage and assassination attempts. The country’s economy is also showing signs of recovery, with the rial rebounding from historic lows.
