Iranian Activist Narges Mohammadi Released from Prison After 21 Days

Iranian authorities have allowed Nobel Peace Prize winner and prominent human rights activist Narges Mohammadi to leave prison for 21 days after surgery for suspected cancer, but her family says the decision is “too little, too late.”

Mohammadi’s family claimed she has been left “unable to walk” and is in an ambulance on her way home. The activist spent over a decade in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, where she is serving multiple sentences totaling more than 30 years for alleged acts against national security and spreading propaganda.

Critics say Mohammadi was wrongly detained as a political prisoner who advocated for women’s rights and democracy in Iran. Her family had requested she be released for at least three months to recover from the surgery.

Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight against women’s oppression and human rights promotion, is suffering from various health issues including arthritis, disc disease, and heart problems.

Her foundation stated that the Iranian authorities’ decision is a suspension of her sentence, not a furlough, which means she will have to serve an additional 30 days upon her return. The family and lawyers have long criticized the regime’s handling of Mohammadi’s health issues.
