Human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her work against oppression of women in Iran, has been threatened with “physical elimination” by the regime. According to a statement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Mohammadi received warnings through indirect channels and her lawyers that she risked being targeted unless she ended public engagement within Iran.
Mohammadi, who was serving a 10-year jail sentence at the time of the award, has been arrested 13 times and convicted five times for her advocacy work. Despite this, her foundation reported over 30 years in prison. In recent months, Western intelligence agencies have found evidence of an escalation in plots by the Iranian regime to kidnap or assassinate dissidents abroad.
The UK government recently warned of a “rising” and unpredictable threat from Iran, citing evidence of increased physical threats against opponents of the regime. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has expressed concern for the security of all Iranian citizens with critical voices.
