Israel is closing its embassy in Ireland due to deteriorating relations over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where Palestinian medical officials report that new Israeli airstrikes have killed over 46 people, including several children. The decision comes after Ireland announced recognition of a Palestinian state alongside Norway, Spain, and Slovenia.
Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin expressed concerns about the narrow interpretation of genocide in international law, which he believes leads to impunity for Israel’s actions. However, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described Ireland’s stance as “extreme anti-Israel policies.”
The conflict has resulted in a death toll nearing 45,000 Palestinians, with most of Gaza’s population displaced. The World Food Program’s Cindy McCain warned that the situation is dire and urged a ceasefire to prevent widespread hunger.
Israeli airstrikes have targeted schools, hospitals, and civil defense agencies, killing at least 16 people in Khan Younis and 15 in Beit Hanoun. A Palestinian journalist working for Al Jazeera was also killed. The Israeli military claims it struck terrorist targets, but aid groups criticize the lack of distinction between combatants and civilians.
The war began after Hamas militants stormed southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has resulted in almost 45,000 Palestinian deaths, with over half being women and children.
