IRS Employee Buyout Impact on 2025 Tax Season Uncertain

Federal workers accepted the Trump Administration’s buyout offer, with around 40,000 employees choosing to leave their jobs. However, some 30,000 IRS employees who took the buyout will be expected to stay on until May 15 due to the agency’s essential role in this year’s tax season.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) initially stated that these employees would continue working until February 28 and then go on paid administrative leave starting March 1. This means that IRS workers involved in the tax season, including those in Taxpayer Services, Information Technology, and the Taxpayer Advocate Service, will be unable to take paid leave until after the tax filing deadline.

This could potentially affect the efficiency of the agency, with some employees potentially still working during the spring break period. The impact on the 2025 tax season remains uncertain, and it is unclear how this will ultimately affect taxpayers.
