The idea that sleeping eight hours a night is best has been around for over two centuries. Robert Owen, a Welsh textile-maker, suggested this in 1817 to create a fairer work week. But is it really the key to optimal rest? The answer is not as clear-cut.
Some research suggests that sleeping too little can be just as bad as sleeping too much. In fact, studies have shown that both extreme cases – insomnia and hypersomnia – can have serious consequences on physical and mental health.
The problem with the one-size-fits-all approach to sleep is that it doesn’t account for individual differences in needs and lifestyles. Some people might need more or less sleep than others, depending on factors like age, work schedule, and overall health.
While eight hours of sleep may be a good starting point, it’s essential to listen to your body and find what works best for you. By recognizing that sleep is not a one-size-fits-all solution, we can start to have a more nuanced conversation about rest and recovery.
