Is ‘Gemini’ Google’s New Hotword?

Google has hinted at making a switch from its long-standing hotword “Hey Google” to something new, related to Gemini AI. Following recent updates to the Google Assistant and multiple teaser videos, it appears the company is ready to make the change. However, no official announcement has been made yet.

In a recent Android Authority report, debugging expert Shiv discovered strings in the latest beta version of the Google app that suggest the new hotword will be “Gemini.” The update includes phrases like “Hey Gemini” and references to Voice Match, indicating that the old hotword may still work for those who have enabled it.

However, another recent marketing material hint suggests that the change might be reserved for a select few models. A sentence in Portugese from the Samsung Galaxy S25 series reads “Hey Google Gemini,” which some speculate could be a sign that the new wake word will replace or join the existing hotword.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the exact nature of the switch, it’s clear that Google is preparing to move forward with its new Gemini-related hotword. Whether this change will bring significant benefits or simply be an evolution of the existing experience remains to be seen.
