Is ‘Kraven the Hunter’ a Marvel or DC Character?

The long-awaited film “Kraven the Hunter” has finally hit theaters, leaving many fans wondering if the title character is a Marvel or DC superhero. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into Kraven’s comic book origins and explore the future of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal.

To set the record straight, Kraven is indeed a Marvel character, but his film is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Instead, it will contribute to the Sony Spider-Man villain universe, which includes films like “Morbius,” “Madame Web,” and the “Venom” trilogy. This means that audiences can enjoy the movie without needing to watch dozens of hours of Avengers outings.

In the comics, Kraven is traditionally used as an antagonist to Spider-Man, rarely getting his own emotional arcs or personal journeys. He was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964 and depicted as a Russian big game hunter with a bloodlust that can only be satiated by hunting the world’s most dangerous game. Kraven has also been regarded as one of Spider-Man’s most violent and dangerous opponents.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal marks the character’s first major appearance in a live-action film, although he was previously depicted in animated Spider-Man stories and games. The future of the character is uncertain, but Sony’s decision to roll credits for their Spider-Man Villain-verse with “Kraven the Hunter” means that this might be the last time we see Kraven on the big screen at least in this form.

However, there’s hope for the character yet. Ariana DeBose, who portrays Calypso Ezili in the movie, hopes to see Kraven have an epic showdown with Spider-Man in a future film. With the success of “Kraven the Hunter,” Sony might reconsider producing additional films featuring the character.
