Is Moderate Wine Consumption a Health Risk?

The surgeon general’s recent warning on the health risks of alcohol has left many wine enthusiasts like me feeling conflicted. As a wine and food critic who has recommended bottles for 30 years, I’ve also tried to live a healthy life by drinking two or three glasses of wine with dinner daily.

However, the surgeon general’s warning suggests that my daily habit is not moderate enough and may even be hazardous. But what about the risks of sugary soft drinks or ultraprocessed foods? Shouldn’t we focus on those instead?

Recent scientific studies have shown mixed results when it comes to the health benefits of alcohol. While some research suggests that moderate consumption can lower mortality rates, others warn that any amount of alcohol is detrimental.

A 2023 report from the National Academies of Science found that moderate consumption of alcohol is associated with a lower risk of death from all causes. However, another study by the World Health Organization warns that even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful.

Given the conflicting evidence and potential biases in the research, I’m inclined to follow my long-held principle of moderation in all things. It’s easier to make changes when faced with conflicting opinions, rather than jumping on every new trend.

For younger readers like my children, who are now in their early 30s, I would advise them to drink wine and other alcoholic beverages in moderation, as part of a balanced lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, and social interaction. By doing so, they can enjoy the pleasures of wine while minimizing its risks.

Ultimately, it’s up to each individual to make informed decisions about their own health and well-being. As someone who has spent decades enjoying wine and food, I believe that moderation is key – not just for my own sake, but for the sake of our collective health and happiness.
