Is Texting Still a Security Risk?

The US government’s warnings about texting security have not changed much since December, despite new developments. Chinese hackers prompted the initial advice to use fully encrypted messaging, but Apple and Google offered secure options within their own platforms.

A recent update confirms that fully encrypted RCS messaging is coming to both Android and iOS devices, delivering end-to-end encryption for the first time between the two operating systems. However, it’s not available yet, with no release date confirmed.

Many users who switched to WhatsApp or Signal after the initial warnings have reverted to their old habits. Experts still recommend using end-to-end encrypted platforms for texts and calls, like WhatsApp for daily messages and Signal for more sensitive chats.

The upgrade of RCS is a game-changer, making SMS obsolete for 2FA and marketing messages. The Meta-WhatsApp rivalry is gaining momentum as the new feature takes shape. Expect increased threats from toll and package scams, as well as federal and local law enforcement impersonation.

As summer approaches, expect more details on the timing of RCS’s upgrade.
