Ispace’s Resilience Lander Fails to Land Safely on Moon

Japan-based company Ispace’s lander Resilience attempted to touch down on the moon around 3:17 p.m. ET, but the mission failed. The exact reasons for the failure are unclear, with officials saying the lander likely crashed into the lunar surface. This was Ispace’s second attempt at a soft landing. Other robotic landers developed by companies and governments worldwide, including NASA-backed efforts, have also attempted to reach the moon.

Earlier this year, two NASA-backed companies, Firefly and Intuitive Machines, made successful attempts at moon landing. Ispace is working with NASA on a future lunar mission despite not being directly backed for this attempt. The failure marks another setback in the renewed race to explore the lunar surface.
