Israel and Hamas Hold Indirect Talks on Gaza Ceasefire

Israel and Hamas began indirect negotiations in Egypt on Monday, focusing on accepting the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace proposal. The talks aim to establish a ceasefire deal, but several key details remain in contention. Hamas is seeking guarantees that Israel will not restart its military campaign once the group releases its remaining hostages.

Hamas has agreed to some elements of the cease-fire deal, including a requirement for Israeli forces to pull back to the “yellow line,” the place where the Israeli military was in August. However, key sticking points remain, such as Hamas’s demand for guarantees that Israel will not restart its operations once the group releases its remaining hostages.

The negotiations were attended by top negotiator Ron Dermer from Israel and senior Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. The US special envoy Steve Witkoff was also present.

US President Trump has repeatedly emphasized the importance of completing the first phase of his peace proposal within 72 hours, warning that “massive bloodshed will follow” if the talks fail.

The negotiations come as tensions between Israel and Hamas remain high, with the threat of full-scale war looming over the region.
