Israel launched a wave of deadly attacks on Gaza overnight, targeting two camps and a school where displaced people were living. The military used drones to set refugee tents ablaze in the al-Mawasi camp, killing seven people. Further strikes also killed four others in a civilian car and vehicle carrying security personnel.
In another attack, quadcopters and armoured vehicles fired at a school housing displaced people in Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing one person. The military also targeted an area north of the camp, killing four more people.
The attacks came as part of a bloody 24 hours in the Strip, with a total of 50 people killed since early Sunday. The hospital in Beit Lahiya, Kamal Adwan Hospital, was also attacked, and about 400 civilians were forced to evacuate due to the military’s threats.
The head of the hospital said the military was targeting fuel tanks, which could cause a large explosion and mass casualties. Palestinian armed group Hamas called the attacks “a crime of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement”. The UN’s Lazzarini reiterated his calls for a ceasefire, saying “the world must not become numb” after the bloodshed.
The military’s actions are part of a larger pattern of attacks on schools and hospitals in Gaza, with charity Oxfam reporting that only 12 aid trucks were allowed into northern Gaza over the past two and a half months. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has called for a ceasefire, saying all wars have rules that must be followed.
