Israel has cut off power to two desalination plants in central Gaza, leaving thousands without water. The Deir Al-Balah Municipality announced that the South Sea Desalination Plant and the Basra Desalination Plant stopped operations due to Israeli occupation forces cutting off electricity supply.
The plants produce 20,000 cubic meters of desalinated water daily, supplying 70% of residents with water. Director General of Planning, Water and Sanitation in Gaza Municipality, Maher Ashour Salem warned that current water availability is less than 25% of normal quantities due to Israel’s destruction of water supply lines.
He cautioned that cutting off the remaining 20% water supply would trigger a humanitarian disaster, affecting domestic use, hospitals, and shelters. The loss of this vital water source will also exacerbate the crisis caused by the destruction of over three-quarters of Gaza’s water wells.
