Israel Enters Gaza City with Expanded Military Operation

Israel has begun its assault on Gaza City after approving a plan to take over the city, which includes calling up 60,000 reservists for an expanded military operation. The IDF announced that it will intensify strikes on Hamas in Gaza City and is warning citizens of potential harm.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed that timetables for seizing control of strongholds and defeating Hamas be shortened. Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has authorized the plans for the major new operation, which includes an additional 20,000 reservists having their service extended.

Hamas has criticized the Israeli military’s announcement, saying it will lead to mass killings of civilians and destruction of infrastructure. The United Nations has also denounced the military operations, stating that they will result in mass killings of civilians and destruction of vital infrastructure.

Scores of people have starved to death in Gaza in recent weeks, including dozens of children. Global outrage and sweeping protests have increased, with growing numbers demanding an end to the offensive. Israel is also giving final approval for a widely contested settlement project in the occupied West Bank that could split the territory in two.

Ceasefire talks are uncertain, despite recent announcements by European leaders recognizing a Palestinian state. The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that further displacement and hostilities risk worsening an already catastrophic situation.
