The Israeli cabinet has approved the firing of Ronen Bar, the head of the Shin Bet domestic intelligence service, effective April 10. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously stated his loss of confidence in Bar due to a corruption investigation involving Netanyahu’s office.
However, Bar claims that the decision was founded on “baseless claims” and does not comply with rules. He has also announced his intention to step down early to take responsibility for intelligence lapses that failed to prevent an attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Protests against the move have intensified over the past three days, with demonstrators joining forces with those opposed to resuming fighting in Gaza. The decision has highlighted deep divisions within Israeli society, with many criticizing Netanyahu’s government for undermining democratic institutions.
The protests were met with a heavy police response, including water cannon and arrests. Several opposition politicians, including former Defence Minister Benny Gantz, condemned the clashes, calling them a result of “extremist” policies that have lost their grip on society.
With 59 Israeli hostages remaining in Gaza, protesters fear for their safety as the situation remains uncertain. The government’s decision has sparked concerns about the erosion of democracy and the rule of law in Israel.
