Indirect talks between Israeli and Hamas officials continued on Monday, aiming for a cease-fire and hostage release deal. A list of 34 hostages, approved by Hamas, has been presented as part of the agreement. However, the Israeli government downplays the significance of this development, saying it’s too early to declare a breakthrough.
The US is supporting the talks through mediators Qatar and Egypt, seeking a deal that includes Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent cease-fire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to acknowledge any willingness to end the war, stating his goal is to eradicate Hamas as a military force in Gaza.
Around 100 hostages remain in Gaza, with at least a third presumed dead according to Israeli authorities. A weeklong truce last year allowed for the release of 105 hostages, but subsequent efforts have faltered due to differing demands between the two sides.
The latest list of hostages includes 10 women and five soldiers, as well as 11 older male hostages. Israel is demanding information on the status of these hostages without receiving any confirmation from Hamas first.
The negotiations are progressing, according to Israeli officials, but they caution that progress has been made before in similar talks. The US and Qatar/Egypt are facilitating the discussions with the goal of a comprehensive deal.
