Israel Intensifies Attacks on Syria Amid Wary Leadership

Israel has intensified its airstrikes on Syria, targeting military and ammunition sites across the country. De facto Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has warned against further conflict, saying his country cannot afford to enter a new war. Al-Sharaa’s comments came as Israel carried out dozens of air raids since the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad last week.

The strikes have focused on Damascus and its outskirts, including ammunition depots and air defence systems. Israeli forces have also destroyed roads, power lines, and water networks in the southeastern Quneitra region after people refused to evacuate.

HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa said Israel’s actions are unjustified and threaten a new escalation in the region. However, he added that Syria is exhausted from years of war and conflict and cannot afford to enter another conflict. Al-Sharaa pledged to disband all Syrian factions and establish a stable government.

The US has also made contact with HTS, despite designating the group as a terrorist organization in 2018. The UN envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called for increased aid to Syria and the lifting of sanctions on opposition fighters.

Analysts say Israel’s actions are driven by a desire to strike without knowing the details of the new Syrian regime. This approach may escalate tensions further, highlighting the need for caution and dialogue in resolving the conflict.
