Israel Intensifies Gaza City Strikes Ahead of Planned Offensive

Israel has intensified airstrikes on parts of Gaza City as it prepares to launch a planned offensive in the territory’s largest urban area. Over 64 people were killed and nearly 300 injured in Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The conflict has resulted in over 62,686 deaths and 157,951 injuries since Israel launched its campaign against Hamas in October 2023. The operation, which includes 60,000 reservists, aims to defeat Hamas and expand its control over Gaza.

Tanks have pounded areas of Zeitoun and Shejayia, while troops returned to the Jabalia refugee camp. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) say the troops’ activity is expanding the fighting to additional areas and preventing Hamas terrorists from returning.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that a staff member had been released by the IDF after being held in Gaza since July 2023. However, tensions remain high in Israel, particularly among families of hostages who want an end to the war to bring their captive relatives home.

Netanyahu’s plan to conquer the entire Gaza Strip has put pressure on Hamas to agree to a deal. Mediators Qatar and Egypt are trying to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal, but Israeli officials have rejected a partial deal. The Israeli military has warned that Gaza City will be razed if Hamas does not disarm and release all hostages.

The UN and non-governmental organisations warn that an Israeli offensive in Gaza City will have a significant humanitarian impact, with most homes estimated to be damaged or destroyed. Conditions of famine were confirmed in Gaza City for the first time on Friday.
